The Joy of Obedience

January 4, 2025

Writing this, I'm just back from taking Xena, a board and train I've had for 6 days now, on a fully off leash walk around my neighborhood and through a open field/nature park. On the way to a local park in Roseville, she stayed in a proper heel the entire time and once we arrived, she had the freedom to do whatever she wanted. She wandered, rolled in the grass, and ran around a bit. When I called her back to start walking home, she returned to me immediately and stayed in position the entire walk home. It was such a joy to spend the time together.

When we're so focused on training, it can be easy to forget that we have dogs so we can enjoy them. I want to be able to play with my dog and laugh at the silly things they do. I want to go for a walk and not have to constantly be on alert. I want to be able to relax when I'm with my dog.

That's really the point of all this. All the techniques and recommendations I make are always to that aim. Having an obedient dog is cool and impressive, but the best part for me is having the freedom to enjoy life with my dog.

The key to all that freedom and joy that comes from owning a dog comes with the training. With a little structure and consistency, it's absolutely achievable.

As a trainer, my goal is to give you and your dog the skills and knowledge to enjoy each others company as much as possible.
